What is a power surge protector?
A surge protector is an electrical device designed to protect your electronics from power surges. A power surge is a brief, unexpected spike in voltage. The device works by diverting the excess voltage away from your sensitive electronics and safely to the ground wire.
What's the difference between a surge protector and a simple power strip?
This is the most critical distinction. A power strip is just an extension cord with multiple outlets. It offers no protection; it only distributes power. A surge protector looks similar but contains internal components (like MOVs - Metal Oxide Varistors) that absorb and divert voltage spikes.
Should I trust the "Connected Equipment Warranty"?
A connected equipment warranty is a good sign of a manufacturer's confidence, but treat it with caution. These warranties often have many requirements and exclusions, and proving the surge protector was at fault can be very difficult. Your primary reason for buying should be the protective specs (joules, UL rating), not the warranty.
Are the USB ports on surge protectors worth it?
They can be, but you must check the specs. Many have low-power USB-A ports (5W-12W) that will charge a phone slowly. For fast-charging phones or powering a laptop, look for a surge protector that specifically offers USB-C Power Delivery (PD) with a high wattage (65W or more).
What is "clamping voltage"?
Clamping voltage is the voltage level at which the surge protector will activate and start diverting the excess power. In this case, a lower clamping voltage is better, as it means the protector will kick in sooner to stop a smaller, potentially damaging spike from reaching your equipment. Look for a clamping voltage of 400V or less.
